GAF Energy, a Standard Industries company and manufacturer of solar rooftop products, said it will build a new test facility for building-integrated solar photovoltaic (BIPV) products thanks to an investment from the Department of Energy.
GAF Energy is currently looking for a location for a new facility. The company operates two manufacturing facilities in San Jose, California and Georgetown, Texas.
A new pilot project aims to develop, test and validate a combination of optical, thermal and energy models for roof-integrated solar panels to improve understanding of the benefits solar shingles provide in home heating and air conditioning efficiency. The facility will be equipped with weather, PV and temperature monitoring. GAF Energy is partnering with Sandia National Laboratories and its network of regional test centers on the project. The company is conducting continuous solar rooftop testing with Sandia National Labs starting in 2021.
“Rooftop solar presents an opportunity for residential solar to reach the mainstream, and testing is critical to future innovation in this sector,” said Martin DeBono, president of GAF Energy. “We are grateful to the Department of Energy for its continued commitment to supporting clean energy innovation and look forward to continuing our collaboration with experts at Sandia National Laboratory to test the performance, sustainability and benefits of solar rooftops. “
The DOE award was announced earlier this year as part of a broader $71 million investment in research, development and demonstration projects to expand the network of domestic manufacturers in the U.S. solar energy supply chain.
