To be honest, I had never heard of the company SolarFuture before, but when I learned that they would be building the largest rooftop solar power plant less than 100 miles from where I live, it certainly caught my attention.
SolarFuture was founded in 2014 with a focus on cost-effective solar cell solutions for industry and agriculture. Over the years, this has resulted in a number of projects that stand out in terms of both complexity and location, including completed installations on the roof of the Opera House in Copenhagen and several overhead installations for the Oresund Bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden.
Here are some excerpts from the company’s press release for the salient details:
The Danish Solar Company will build the world’s largest rooftop solar power plant in Horsens
Albertslund-based solar company SolarFuture ApS has commissioned a 35 MW rooftop solar power plant at DSV’s new logistics center in Horsens – a monumental project that puts both DSV and SolarFuture on the world map in the solar industry. Construction of the construction site has just begun and is expected to be completed in December 2024.
The World’s Largest Rooftop Solar System – Part of the Green Transition
Solar power plants of similar production size are usually only implemented as ground solar farms in Denmark, and one has to look abroad to find similar projects implemented on industrial rooftops. But even compared to the biggest projects overseas, including Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada, electricity production from a solar plant in Horsens, Denmark, exceeds existing installations worldwide. The building area at DSV’s logistics center is over 300,000 m2, which is the 5th largest building in the world, and most of the roof will be covered with solar panels.
Logistics is the Biggest Challenge
Mads Christensen, CEO of SolarFuture ApS, says: “This is a landmark project for us at SolarFuture ApS and for the entire solar industry in general. It is certainly a great honor to be chosen to build the world’s largest rooftop solar system, which we look forward to delivering. A strong team of experts has been created for the implementation, so we expect the installation to be relatively quick as long as the logistics work out.”
Project Information — DSV Logistikcenter, Horsens
Total solar system output: 35 MW Annual output: 33.15 GWh CO2 savings: 5,300 tons CO2 per year Installation system: Ballast system Location: East/West for optimal even production throughout the day
According to local news TV2 Østjylland, the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024 – a very tight schedule indeed. So 35 MWp is really something. 300,000 square meters or 3,229,000 square feet is a lot, but I believe Tesla’s Gigafactories are bigger. Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada is estimated to have a capacity of 8 MW, and Giga Texas is estimated to reach 30 MW. It is debatable to think that a logistics center in the small country of Denmark can beat the largest buildings on earth. Please help with any tips in the comments.
